Saunkan Saunkne 2022

Saunkan Saunkne is a 2022 Punjabi-language romantic comedy directed by Amarjit Singh Saron. Released on 13 May 2022, the film follows the story of Nirmal and Naseeb, a happily married couple who, after eight years, are still without a child. On the suggestion of Naseeb’s mother-in-law, Naseeb convinces her husband to marry her younger sister, Kirna, as a solution to their childlessness.

The film became a huge hit, and it was shot during the COVID-19 period of 2020. For me, it was my first experience on a big film set. The cast — Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta, and Nimrat Khaira — were already established faces in the industry, attracting a lot of attention.

One of the biggest lessons I learned early in my career is that networking is the oxygen of any industry. In October 2020, I called a university senior who was working extensively in the Punjabi film industry, especially in the direction department, which had very few women at the time. She informed me that Saunkan Saunkne was being shot, and although the first schedule was complete, the second was about to begin in Mohali.

My appointment was last-minute. I first met the director in the car on the way to the set. He looked so young that I didn’t recognize him at first, until the associate introduced him. Calm, focused, and composed, he reminded me of how clarity of vision can truly reflect in a person’s demeanor. This was a crucial film in his career, following his success with Kala Shah Kala starring Binnu Dhillon.

On set, I learned immensely. Due to COVID guidelines, the crew was small, so I had the chance to handle multiple responsibilities — from managing costume continuity and junior artists to maintaining log sheets. It was a full crash course in film production, offering holistic learning.

Despite the challenges, this project was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Seeing my first credit appear on the film in theaters was a childhood dream come true — surreal and unforgettable. The biggest takeaway was the director’s humility and dedication, which left a lasting impression on me.

After this film, the director went on to work on projects like Haunsla Rakh and Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne (both with Diljit Dosanjh). Towards the end of 2023, he shared a gracious acknowledgment on Instagram, mentioning my contribution — a gesture I will never forget.

This journey taught me one key lesson, never forget the people who are part of your journey.
